The Community Gardens of Tucson
The Community Gardens of Tucson (CGT) has recently been awarded $175,000 from the $15.8M Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) grant that was awarded to the Pima County Health Department. The CGT award is being used to double the number of community gardens in Tucson. The focus of the gardens and the grant are the at-risk areas in Pima County that need the most help improving nutrition and fighting obesity. Gardening is an excellent way to work on both and community gardening is even better because community gardening builds communities while teaching good stewardship of land and water. Two of these new gardens are going in to the Flowing Wells area at Youth On Their Own and Homer Davis Elementary School. This area has been particularly hard hit by economic problems and we are looking forward to helping the neighborhoods pull together around their new community gardens, helping them become successful desert gardeners growing healthy fruits and vegetables.
The gardens at Youth On Their Own, 1443 W. Prince Road will be located directly between the YOTO offices. For a small monthly fee, you can have your own personal garden complete with water, shared tools and periodically planned seminars on gardening, etc. Youth On Their Own supports the high school graduation of homeless and abandoned teens in Tucson. YOTO does not receive any monetary support with this garden partnership. Our partnership is to support urban renewal in our community.
