“Youth On Their Own has greatly helped me through the stipends I have been able to earn because of my good grades. I am so grateful for the stipend – which I use to buy clothes, shoes, and food – because I work part-time, but do not make enough money to survive. Staying in school is very important to me, and I do not want to drop out to work full-time to survive. My life would be over if this was it.

My biological parents could no longer financial support me, so when I was 16 they told me that I needed to earn my own way. For a while, I slept in the wash behind my school. I would get ready for school using the drinking fountain out back. I carried a shirt and some hygiene supplies in my backpack. Eventually, one of my friend’s parents said I could stay with them. I needed Youth On Their Own because my family did not want to spend any money on me or what I needed to succeed in school. I am most grateful to my friend’s family and Youth On Their Own for helping me.

I have a 3.89 GPA and have dreams of going to college, then to medical school to become a cardiac surgeon, so I can be as smart as Dr. Oz! I recently earned a Pima Community College scholarship, so I am on my way. I am deeply grateful to those who have made this opportunity possible for me.”
